Organic Grass-fed A2 Protein Yogurt Smoothie Recipe

This A2 protein yogurt smoothie is my children’s current summer favorite! This nutrient-dense summer strawberry-banana-flavored smoothie is sure to please. It is made using A2 organic yogurt from grass-fed whole cow’s milk and lightly sweetened with honey.

Make some extra or use leftovers to make a popsicle treat for kids by pouring this smoothie into molds to make your own deliciously creamy popsicles! It works well for organic baby food pouches as well if you replace the honey with maple syrup.

The whole milk yogurt gives this smoothie a creamy texture and adds protein as does the organic seeds. Choose A2 yogurt for better digestibility and to avoid digestive discomfort caused by A1 beta-casein protein. This smoothie is perfect for hot summer days or a quick wholesome breakfast.

Ingredients

  • A2 organic yogurt from grass-fed cows
  • hemp seeds/ hemp hearts or 1 scoop of protein powder
  • golden flax seeds or chia seeds
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • water
  • banana fresh or frozen
  • frozen strawberries

Equipment needed

  • High-powered blender
  • cups to serve

What is A2 milk?

A2 milk is milk that contains 100% A2 beta-casein protein, most milk contains a combination of A1 and A2 beta-casein protein. A2 milk is from cows that only produce the A2 type of beta-casein protein. This A2 form has been reported to be easier to digest and more tolerable for sensitive individuals. A2 and A2/A2 mean the same thing, that the milk contains 100% of the A2 form of beta-casein protein.

Hemp Hearts

Once I discovered hemp hearts and how protein and omega-packed, they are I started adding them to everything. I like to use them instead of protein powder as well as they contain 10mg of protein per 3 Tablespoons and contain iron, B12, folate, and healthy omegas. These heart-healthy nutritional seeds pack quite the nutritional punch and work very well in smoothies!

To make this smoothie I use a high-powered blender, and the hemp hearts get ground up as it blends. If using a standard blender, you may need to grind the hemp hearts if you find they do not blend into the smoothie. Grind the hemp hearts if needed in a coffee or spice grinder.

Frozen Fruit

Although this recipe only calls for frozen strawberries and bananas, but you can add any combination of frozen fruit to this smoothie. I have found that berries are a good staple and complement other fruit, some of my favorite berries are:

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries or wild blueberries
  • raspberries
  • Blackberries

Tropical fruits are fun to add to smoothies as well and add some amazing colors and flavors. Some favorites are:

  • Dragon fruit
  • passion fruit
  • pineapple
  • banana

Some other fruits to consider:

  • oranges
  • peaches

Substitutes or Variations

This recipe is versatile and I have included substitutes for some of the ingredients used. I like to use organic hemp hearts in my smoothies for added protein and healthy fats. I understand that this is not a common ingredient and I encourage you to use what you have on hand such as protein powder or peanut butter.

I like to use golden flax seeds but regular flax can be used or chia seeds. If you choose to use chia seeds hydrate them before use by placing them in a small bowl and covering the seeds with filtered water for a few minutes until they expand and gel. I have found that chia seeds thicken smoothies if they are not hydrated first.

This smoothie is lightly sweetened with honey and is great for big kids but if you have a child under 2 you can leave out the honey or replace it with maple syrup. To make this smoothie plant-based or vegan replace the yogurt with a plant-based yogurt and use maple syrup instead of honey.

Tips

  • This recipe is made using a high powered blender, if you are using a standard blender you can half this recipe, use ground flax seeds, and possibly less frozen fruit if your blender is not handling the frozen fruit well.
